Running a nonprofit often means wearing a dozen hats — from fundraising to community outreach, every hour matters. What many organizations don’t realize is that Google offers $10,000 every month in free ad credits to help nonprofits reach more people online. If you’ve never applied for it, or assumed it was complicated, don’t worry. This short guide breaks down exactly how to qualify, apply, and make the most of the Google Ad Grant — in plain English.
Step 1: Confirm You’re Eligible
To qualify for the Google Ad Grant, your organization must be a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, have an active, secure website (HTTPS) that reflects your mission clearly, and not be a hospital, government agency, or school. You can review the full eligibility requirements on Google’s official page: Google for Nonprofits Eligibility.
Step 2: Apply for Google for Nonprofits
Once you’ve confirmed eligibility, visit Google for Nonprofits, verify your organization through TechSoup (typically takes 1–2 business days), and once approved, activate your Ad Grant inside your Google for Nonprofits dashboard. Keep your mission statement and website information ready — you’ll reference both during the setup process.
Step 3: Set Up Your Ads Account Properly
This is one of the most common sticking points for nonprofits. When creating your Google Ads account, create a new account (not an existing paid one), choose USD as the currency, skip billing setup — the grant covers all ad spend — and link your Ads account to your Google for Nonprofits profile. If you enter billing information by mistake, the account may not qualify for the grant.
Step 4: Build Compliant Campaigns
Google requires a specific campaign structure for Ad Grant accounts. Use search campaigns only (no display or video), include at least five ad groups per campaign, create two active ads within each ad group, add a minimum of two site link extensions (extra links beneath your ads), and maintain at least a 5% click-through rate (CTR) each month. Following these rules ensures your ads stay active and compliant over time.
Step 5: Use Ads to Tell Your Story
Think of your Google Ads as a way to share your mission with new audiences. Focus on the outcomes that matter most to your organization: donations (“Support our mission to serve families in [City]”), volunteers (“Join our team and make a difference locally”), programs and services (“Explore our free community workshops”), and events (“Sign up for our annual fundraiser”). When your ads connect emotionally, they attract supporters who care about your cause.
Step 6: Stay Active Every Month
To maintain eligibility for the Ad Grant, log into your Google Ads account at least once every 30 days, avoid pausing campaigns for long periods, and review your keywords regularly to adjust based on performance. Consistency is key. Even a few minutes each month can keep your grant active and effective.
Step 7: Combine It with SEO and Social Media
The nonprofits seeing the best results use the Ad Grant to drive traffic to specific landing pages — donation forms, volunteer sign-ups, and event pages — then continue the conversation through SEO and social media. That combination creates a sustainable visibility loop that builds awareness and long-term support.
